Diary of a Composer - Day 1 - 2nd Jan 2023

I’ve been a Professional Composer now for six months. I gave up employment on the 1st of June 2022 and set out on my own, embarking as a professional composer and musician, to craft my own path through the world, composing music and changing the world.

And that is full of joys but also full of stress.

It is so different being a full time composer as opposed to a hobbyist and I say that because I now have to hustle for every single pound that I make.

When I was in employment, I used to turn up for work and get paid. If I was having a good day or a bad day it didn’t really matter as money still magically appeared in my bank account. Now of course, I have to hustle for every pound…..if I’m not working I’m not earning.

Being a composer is an absolute dream and a passion of mine that I’ve wanted to do for decades. But there is a bit of a sting to it as actually I’ve got to run business….I’m no longer just making music…I am now running a company.

And what I’ve found over last six months is that running a company really hard work…. it takes so much time….there is so much to do that is not composing music.

But actually, what I need to do is compose MORE music!

So this year is less about running a company and more about composing music, composing emotion through the medium of music.

And to accompany that, I thought I would do a video blog that records the journey of all of that. It’s going to be rough and ready, there’s gonna be highs in it and there’s going to be some lows because this is a frustrating frustrating profession to be in…..but I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it and I do, I absolutely do love composing music.

And hopefully there will be a benefit to someone….me personally and to both of you are watching and reading this Blog/Vlog

So, through this year I plan to record everyday a little video of what’s going on….what’s going on musically composing etc the struggles, joys, the highs and the lows.

For some of you, you are probably wondering, ‘that’s all very well Michael but why are you recording it all in black and white?’

The last six months has taught me that while I think everything is black and white when it came to composing music, I now realise it’s not…. everything is a shade of grey…. so I’m not recording in black and white, I am recording in Shades of Grey just to remind us all that life isn’t black and white…. life isn’t that defined…. it is all a shade of grey. It is music that provides the colour, the music that enables us to see those emotions and feel the joy.

Well, my arm is aching where I’m holding the phone up and walking at the same time, struggling to breathe a bit because of Covid and I’ve got about a mile to go before I get home, and then I might make it into the studio.

Anyhow see you on the 3rd of January….tomorrow.
